RYS JUBILEE HAVEN REPORT

The main substance of the sea wall of the Jubilee Haven consists of sixteen very large reinforced concrete boxes, called ‘caissons’, which are placed in a trench dug into the sea bed and then filled with cement and aggregate. The top of the caissons is a little below high water level. The wall will be completed with coping beams and a parapet that will bring it up to the level of the gun platform. Rocks will then be stacked against the outside of the wall and the inside will be finished so that it appears to be one continuous construction.

Dredging to prepare the trench to take the caissons started in mid October and the first caisson was in place on 18 November. This was one of the critical stages of construction. The caisson measures approximately 8m x 5.25m x 6.3m depth and had to be positioned with a tolerance of only 7.5 cms.

Ten of the sixteen caissons were in place on 1 December and it is expected that all will be installed before the Christmas break. More than half of the coping beams have already been cast and detailed in Woolston and are ready for transfer to Cowes by barge.

The current expected completion date of the wall is 3 March 2006. The weather has caused some delay, but this will not be such a factor once the basic structure is complete. The pontoons are also due to be installed in March so we are still expecting to have full use of the Haven for Easter 2006.
