New Jubilee Haven looks set to be a winner all round
On target for completion in March 06
Cowes, Isle of Wight, 14 December 2005
Work is now visibly well underway for the construction of the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) Jubilee Haven, with the basic structure of the sea wall now complete. However, a great deal of behind the scenes preparatory work had already gone into making this project happen and much has already been achieved with the Royal Yacht Squadron working closely with a variety of agencies in addition to undertaking the necessary surveys required.
Once completed (expected to be in March 2006), the Haven will provide 400ft of temporary berthing. In addition to fulfilling the Royal Yacht Squadron’s requirements for additional berthing, this project has also been the catalyst for building the Cowes Town Parade Landing by offering protection at the South-Eastern corner of the Harbour entrance.
The planning application was made jointly by the Royal Yacht Squadron and Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC), with the RYS administering and funding the preliminary work for both projects. The RYS has also made a direct contribution to the Cowes Town Parade landing by undertaking to make a substantial financial contribution towards the cost of the dredging. Other key contributors to this project include Cowes Week Sponsorship Ltd and Cowes Week’s title sponsor Skandia.
- There has been close consultation with interested parties such as anglers and local residents with the result that there has been some modification of the plans to meet specific requirements.
- The addition of the Jubilee Haven will significantly increase the Royal Yacht Squadron’s ability to run international regattas and will therefore bring additional benefits to the town. It is also hoped that this entire project will act as a catalyst for the continued upgrading of the Cowes Parade area; it may also help other clubs develop their facilities by affording protection to their steps.
Lord Iliffe, Commodore, the Royal Yacht Squadron, comments: “At the same time as putting Cowes Parade back on the map, much in line with the developments taking place in the immediate vicinity, this is also a unique opportunity to bring the Club into the 21st Century.”
